Freshwater Atlas BCGW Key

This key contains brief descriptions of FWA data available from the BCGW. For information on accessing FWA data please refer to Data Access

Point Data

BCGW Cryptic Name Brief Description
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_NAMED_POINT_FEATURES_SP Named point features (both fresh and marine) such as points of land, etc. Point names included as an attribute.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_OBSTRUCTIONS_SP Water obstacles (rapids, falls, etc).

Line Data

BCGW Cryptic Name Brief Description
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_LINEAR_BOUNDARIES_SP All bank edges (of rivers, lakes, and wetlands), delimiter edges, glacier edges, and administrative boundary edges. These are the linear features that makeup the polygonal water bodies.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_WATERSHED_BOUNDARIES_SP All principal and non-principal watershed boundary edges. These are the linear features that makeup the watershed polygons.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_COASTLINES_SP Linear coastlines of BC, including mainland and marine islands. Lines are directionalized and connected. Attributes include a hierarchical key and route identifier.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_STREAM_NETWORKS_SP Flow network arcs (observed, inferred and constructed). Contains no banks, coast or watershed boundary arcs. Directionalized and connected. Contains hierarchical key and route identifier.

Polygonal Data

BCGW Cryptic Name Brief Description
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_WATERSHEDS_POLY All fundamental watershed polygons generated from watershed boundary lines, bank edges, delimiter edges, coastline edges, and administrative boundary edges.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_WETLANDS_POLY All wetland polygons for the province.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_BAYS_AND_CHANNELS_POLY Bay and Channel (fresh and marine) features and associated names.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_GLACIERS_POLY Glaciers and ice masses for the province.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_NAMED_WATERSHEDS_POLY All named watershed polygons.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_RIVERS_POLY All double line river polygons for the province.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_ISLANDS_POLY All island polygons. Islands may overlap as there are islands within islands.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_ASSESMENTS_WATERSHEDS_POLY Assessment Watersheds are mesoscale aquatic units designed to replace the 3rd order 1:50K watersheds. Assessment Watersheds are based on groupings of fundamental watersheds using FWA watershed code and local code, with a target size of between 2,000ha and 10,000ha.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_WATERSHED_GROUPS_POLY Polygons delimiting the watershed group boundary, which is a collections of drainage areas. In-land groups will contain a single polygon, coastal groups may contain multiple polygons (one for each island).
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_MANMADE_WATERBODIES_POLY All manmade water bodies, including reservoirs and canals, for the province.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_LAKES_POLY All lake polygons for the province.

Data Table

BCGW Cryptic Name Brief Description
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_EDGE_TYPE_CODES Links the edge type codes used in the stream network layer with an English description used to categorize stream network features.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_WATERSHED_TYPE_CODES Lookup table for watershed type codes
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_STREAMS_20K_50K Contains all primary and secondary matches between 1:20K and 1:50K stream edges. This attribute table links the new Freshwater Atlas watershed codes with the existing 1:50K Watershed Atlas watershed codes for cross reference purposes.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_WATERBODY_TYPE_CODES Links the water body type codes used in the water body layers with an English description used to categorize water body features.
WHSE_BASEMAPPING.FWA_WATERBODIES_20K_50K Contains all primary and secondary matches between 1:20K and 1:50K water body polygons. This attribute table links the new Freshwater Atlas watershed codes with the existing 1:50K Watershed Atlas watershed codes for cross reference purposes.
